The GE VMIC VMIVME-7740 (also known as VMIVME-7740-855) is a high-performance VMEbus-based single-board computer. It integrates an Intel Pentium III processor in a Socket 370 configuration, capable of reaching speeds up to 850 MHz. This processor features 32-bit addressing and a 64-bit data bus, with its superscalar architecture allowing the execution of three instructions per clock cycle. The inclusion of a dynamic branch prediction unit, separate instruction and data caches, and MMX™ technology further boosts its processing performance. Additionally, the Pentium III processor comes with a 256 Kbyte advanced transfer cache (on-chip full-speed level 2 cache) as part of its dual independent bus architecture, ensuring high bandwidth and excellent performance.
In terms of memory, the VMIVME-7740 accepts a 144-pin SDRAM SODIMM, supporting a maximum capacity of 512 Mbyte. It has extensive I/O capabilities, including two on-board fast Ethernet controllers that support both 10BaseT and 100BaseTX interfaces, facilitating seamless network connectivity. There is also an option for up to 192 Mbyte of IDE CompactFlash, accessible via the secondary IDE port, which can be used for storage and even configured as a boot device.
This single-board computer is designed to be highly versatile in its applications. It can function as a standard PC/AT, performing a PC/AT-style power-on self-test and then booting various operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows NT, or other PC-compatible ones. It also serves as a VMEbus controller, interacting with other VMEbus modules through the on-board PCI-to-VMEbus bridge and endian conversion hardware. It can be accessed as a VMEbus slave board, and programmers can easily control its VMEbus functions by linking to a library of VMEbus interrupt and control functions, which is available with VMIC's VMISFT - 9420 IOWorks Access software for Windows NT users.
Moreover, the VMIVME-7740 offers features beyond those of a typical PC/AT-compatible SBC. It has three programmable 16-bit general-purpose timers and a software-selectable watchdog timer with a reset function, enhancing system reliability. There is also support for remote Ethernet boot, making it convenient for network-based deployments. It comes with a PMC expansion interface with VMEbus P2 input/output, enabling further customization and expansion. The board supports VME64 modes like A32/A24/D32/D16/D08(EO)/MBLT64/BLT32 and includes byte-swapping hardware (patented as 6,032,212) for both little-endian and big-endian data interfaces. Additionally, it has a built-in real-time clock and a micro speaker.
Through the Chips & Technology AGP graphics adapter, the VMIVME-7740 supports high-resolution graphics and multimedia-quality video. The adapter has 4 Mbyte of internal synchronous DRAM and a high-bandwidth 64-bit data interface, capable of supporting screen resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200 x 64,000 colors in single-view mode.
