Description
The MVME5500 is the latest flagship in MOTOROLA's VME line, enabling a higher level of performance in a single VMEbus slot. The MVME5500 uses the latest MPC7455 processor and runs at speeds of up to 1 GHz or higher, making it ideal for data-intensive applications.
The MVME5500 provides not only faster processor performance, but also balanced performance for the processor, memory, local bus, and I/O subsystems. The powerful Marvell Discovery system controller supports 133 MHz host bus and 133 MHz SDRAM memory bus, which perfectly matches the high-speed processor. To match system I/O with outstanding processor performance, the MVME5500 offers dual 64-bit, 33/66 MHz PCI buses. Each PCI bus has a PMC site that supports cards running at 33 or 66 MHz. The Universe II VME interface and PMCspan connector are isolated from PMC stations on a dedicated 33 MHz PCI bus segment, so both PMC stations can operate at 66 MHz. The MVME5500 also offers a Gigabit Ethernet interface, a 10/100BaseTX Ethernet interface, and two serial ports. All of this adds up to a balanced, high-performance subsystem that delivers unmatched performance.

Backward compatibility
The MVME5500 continues the direction MOTOROLA began with the MVME5100 family, providing a pathway to migrate from MOTOROLA Embedded controllers and single board computers (SBC) to a single platform. This migration path enables Oems to support different I/O requirements using the same base platform, simplifying part number maintenance, technical expertise requirements, and omissions.
The MVME5500 series provides customers with migration paths from MVME2300, MVME2400, MVME2600, MVME2700 and MVME5100 boards. Enable them to take advantage of features such as the MPC7455 processor, Gigabit Ethernet, and 33/66 MHz PMC sites.
P2 Input/output mode
Like the MVME5100 series, the MVME5500 series supports two jump-configurable P2 I/O modes: PMC mode and IPMC mode. PMC mode is backward compatible with MVME2300/MVME2400 and MVME5100 in PMC mode. In PMC mode, 64 pins of PMC slot 1 and 46 pins of PMC slot 2 on P2 are available for PMC rear I/O. In IPMC mode, the MVME5500 series supports traditional MVME761 or MVME712M I/O modules (PMC I/O limited) when PMC slot 1 is equipped with an IPMC761 or IPMC712 PMC card. In this configuration, PMC slot 2 contains some signals reserved for extended SCSI.
IPMC module
The IPMC761 and IPMC712 are optional additional PMC modules that are backward compatible with previous generation MOTOROLA products that use the MVME761 or MVME712M transition modules, such as the MVME2600, MVME2700, and MVME5100 in IPMC mode. The IPMC module provides the following rear I/O support:
- A single-ended ultra-wide SCSI port
- A parallel port
- Four serial ports (two or three asynchronous ports, one or two synchronous/asynchronous ports, depending on the module)
Transition module
MVME761
The MVME761 transition module offers industry-standard connectors for access to IEEE 1284 parallel ports, 10BaseT or 100BaseT ports via RJ-45 connectors, and two DB-9 connectors for access to asynchronous serial ports configured as EIA-574 DTE. And two HD-26 connectors for access to synchronous/synchronous serial ports. These serial ports are labeled Serial 3 and Serial 4 on the MVME761 panel and can be configured individually as EIA-232, EIA-530, V.35 or X.21 DCE or DTE by installing a MOTOROLA Serial Interface Module (SIM).
The P2 adapter provides interface module signals for the MVME761 transition module. 3-row P2 adapters are available for 8-bit SCSI. The 5-row P2 adapter supports 16-bit SCSI and PMC I/O.
MVME712M
The MVME712M transition module provides industry standard connectors for Centronics parallel ports, narrow SCSI ports, and four DB-25 connectors that provide access to asynchronous/synchronous serial ports and can be jump-configured as EIA-232 DCE or DTE. The P2 adapter provides interface signals for the MVME712M transition module. 3-row P2 adapters are available for 8-bit SCSI.
To access the additional user-definable I/O pins provided via the 5-row VME64 expansion connector, a dedicated P2 adapter board is available. The adapter board replaces the traditional 3-row P2 adapter and extends its functionality with access to PMC I/O pins.
Firmware monitor
The firmware must meet traditional functions such as power-on self-test (POST), initialization, and operating system boot. MOTOROLA's innovative firmware residing on the MVME5500, called MotLoad, goes beyond these requirements with additional features such as interrupt driver I/O, more comprehensive boot testing, and extensive diagnostics with new scripting capabilities. Of course, the debugger interface provided by MotLoad is similar to the time-tested "BUG "interface on MOTOROLA's previous VMEbus boards.
