The GE VMIC VMIVME-7740 (VMIVME-7740-855) is a high-performance VMEbus-based single-board computer. It incorporates an Intel Pentium III processor in a Socket 370 configuration, reaching speeds up to 850 MHz. This processor features 32-bit addressing and a 64-bit data bus, with its superscalar architecture enabling the execution of three instructions per clock cycle. A dynamic branch prediction unit, separate instruction and data caches, and MMX™ technology enhance its processing prowess. Additionally, the Pentium III processor comes with a 256 Kbyte advanced transfer cache (on-chip full-speed level 2 cache) as part of its dual independent bus architecture, ensuring high bandwidth and top-notch performance.

In terms of memory, the VMIVME-7740 accepts a 144-pin SDRAM SODIMM, with a maximum capacity of 512 Mbyte. Its I/O capabilities are extensive. It has two on-board fast Ethernet controllers that support both 10BaseT and 100BaseTX interfaces, facilitating seamless network connectivity. There's also the option for up to 192 Mbyte of IDE CompactFlash, accessible via the secondary IDE port, which can be used for storage and even configured as a boot device.

Functionally, this single-board computer is highly versatile. It can function as a standard PC/AT, conducting a PC/AT-style power-on self-test and then booting various operating systems like MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows NT, or other PC-compatible ones. It also serves as a VMEbus controller, interacting with other VMEbus modules through the on-board PCI-to-VMEbus bridge and endian conversion hardware. It can be accessed as a VMEbus slave board, and programmers can control its VMEbus functions by linking to a library of VMEbus interrupt and control functions, available with VMIC's VMISFT - 9420 IOWorks Access software for Windows NT users.

Moreover, the VMIVME-7740 offers features beyond those of a typical PC/AT-compatible SBC. It has three programmable 16-bit general-purpose timers and a software-selectable watchdog timer with a reset function, enhancing system reliability. There's support for remote Ethernet boot, making it convenient for network-based deployments. It comes with a PMC expansion interface featuring VMEbus P2 input/output, enabling further customization and expansion. The board supports VME64 modes such as A32/A24/D32/D16/D08(EO)/MBLT64/BLT32 and includes byte-swapping hardware (patented as 6,032,212) for both little-endian and big-endian data interfaces. Additionally, it has a built-in real-time clock and a micro speaker.

Through the Chips & Technology AGP graphics adapter, the VMIVME-7740 supports high-resolution graphics and multimedia-quality video. The adapter has 4 Mbyte of internal synchronous DRAM and a high-bandwidth 64-bit data interface, capable of supporting screen resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200 x 64,000 colors in single-view mode. With its comprehensive set of features, the GE VMIC VMIVME-7740 is well-suited for a wide array of applications. These include industrial automation, where it can be used in control systems and data acquisition; telecommunications, for network equipment; military and aerospace, for ruggedized computing platforms; medical imaging, to enhance medical equipment performance; and transportation, for vehicle control systems and onboard computers. With dimensions of 263 × 58 × 28 mm and a weight of 4.3 kg, it provides a compact yet powerful solution for applications demanding high computing power and flexible I/O.
