File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is your tool to easily and quickly move or copy files in and out of your computer over an tml/IP Ethernet connection. Now, it is available in some power companies. While it may not seem like a big deal on the surface, this handy tool can be a big time saver. Why walk to a PLC to copy files when you can access them from your desk via the Internet? If the PLC is in another city, state, or country, how much time would you save by dialing into a PLC (or a separate modem/router) in an Ethernet network?

One of the most exciting and useful new features that software companies are just coming to market is the "internal relational database" embedded in the PLC. As an internal database, it allows access to critical data in one program scan (milliseconds) without having to wait for an external source (another computer or PLC) to send the data through a communication port. This feature opens the door to significant cost savings. For example, in a sort transmitter with a barcode reader, the barcode reader is usually connected to a PC. The PC consults the barcode in its host database and then sends the resulting information to the PLC. Only then can the PLC use data control adapters, gates or boxes. There are usually at least 6 steps to get information to the PLC.

Scan the barcode.

Send the data to the PC.

PC decodes the barcode.

The PC looks up the result information from the database.

Move the data to the PC communication port.

The information is sent to the PLC via a serial communication connection.

Move data from the PLC communication buffer to the PLC program memory and use it (in some cases).
