An ABB AC31 system always includes an AC31 central processing unit. There are 3 types of central processing units:
-40 Series central processing unit with a local I/O expansion interface;
-50 Series central processing unit with a local I/O expansion interface and a CS31 bus interface for remote expansion;
-90 series central processing unit with a CS31 bus interface for remote expansion;
Each central processing unit contains a certain number of I/O points, and sometimes an analog number of I/O points. It is possible, relying on the central processing unit, to increase the number of I/O points by directly connecting to the central processing unit or by adding I/O local expansion modules via the remote expansion module of the CS31 twisted pair.
